Clean Water for the Batwa People
The Need
A country rich in beauty and natural resources, Rwanda has made great strides toward reducing poverty and rebuilding after decades of political turmoil that culminated in the 1994 genocide. However, 16% of Rwandans continue to live on less than $2.15 per day, and just 57% have access to clean drinking water (UNICEF). Indigenous ethnic groups like the Batwa face disproportionately higher levels of poverty and discrimination.
In fact, just 3% of Batwa families have access to clean water.
The Partnership
We believe local leaders are the ones who best understand their communities’ needs and the solutions that will help them thrive. For this reason, ODW strategically partners with locally-led organizations like AIMPO: a nonprofit founded by and for members of the Batwa community in Rwanda. With your help, this three year partnership will:
- Establishing a ceramic water filter cooperative
- Provide water filters for Batwa families
- Create income-generating opportunities through the production, marketing and selling of water filters to the surrounding communities
The Invitation
We need your help to raise $135,250 to provide long-term access to clean drinking water for over 4,000 people. When you contribute your best gift, 100% of your donation (minus transaction fees) goes directly to AIMPO as they work to implement these life-changing initiatives.
