On the one hand it reveals God’s heart for immoral “outsiders,” but there is also a lesser known aspect to the story—Christ’s message to moralistic “insiders.”

In his book The Prodigal God, Tim Keller looks at how this story is about two brothers, as he examines the way Jesus presents the parable to speak both to those who run from God and to those who try to earn his love by being good. The book reveals the heart of the gospel—a message of hope for both the rebellious younger brother and the judgmental older brother, and an invitation for all to experience God’s prodigal, extravagant grace.
