Greetings,
My name is Afryea.
I have been selected to participate in Her Journey Home, a leadership and storytelling experience created by Girls For A Change, an organization that prepares Black girls for the world and prepares the world for Black girls. This journey is more than a trip. It is an opportunity for me to learn more about myself, where I come from, and who I want to become. While in Ghana, I will learn about the culture, history, and traditions, and grow as a leader alongside other girls.
For the past five years, Girls For AChange has been a constant presence in my life. I began as a shy high school freshman, and the organization recognized my potential and poured into me. Today, I am a sophomore in college, thriving in academic and leadership roles. Girls for a Change has provided me with invaluable opportunities to network, travel, and gain hands-on experience through internships across various fields. They are the embodiment of Black love, showcasing their support for young Black girls by intentionally placing them in spaces where they have historically been underrepresented. It is amazing that they are not only taking girls to Ghana, but they are also educating and immersing them in Ghanaian and African cultures, which are often overlooked or minimized. Their commitment goes beyond exposure; it is about empowerment, cultural awareness, and expanding our beliefs of what is possible.
We won’t just be visiting—we will be documenting our journey. I will learn how to tell my own story through film by turning the camera on myself and my peers. This experience will help me build confidence, use my voice, and see myself as a storyteller. When we return home to Richmond, we will learn how to edit our footage, add music, and complete a short film about our journey from RVA to Ghana and back home. On Friday, October 2, at the John Marshall Hotel in Richmond, Virginia, I will share my finished film at the Annual Black Girl Showcase, and donors will be invited to attend and see the stories created from this journey.
The cost of this experience is $6,500, which includes airfare, housing, meals, transportation, programming, safety, and filmmaking equipment. I am asking for support because I cannot do this alone.
